The first lesson with Sabre Escrime of Pasadena is always free!
Students begin class with some light conditioning and then stretching. We then move on to footwork practice, potentially with some blade work as well. Following opening exercises, there will be some review of the last lesson, and then instruction will begin with the next lesson. Class ends with open fencing when the students are ready.
When coming to your free introductory lesson, please schedule that lesson as you would a private lesson below on a Saturday. You or your child will receive a private lesson which one of our instructors will instruct you or your child in basic footwork, blade work, the fundamentals which will be needed to jump into the group lessons. A private lesson as the first lesson is best as you or your child will get individual instruction on the basics, and we will be able to make corrections to form and technique immediately as opposed to trying to catch these issues in a group class.
Group classes are recommended for children 7 and above, but if you have a child either 5 or 6 we are still willing and able to teach. Younger children will be required to take private lessons until such time as one of our coaches believes your child can handle being in the normal group class. This is for the safety of your child as well as the special attention fencers that young require from a coach.
To schedule a private lesson, please click on the coach you wish to schedule with, then follow the prompts on the popup. If the time you would like is not available, please check the other coach!
Private lessons are 20-30 minute instructional sessions between one student and one instructor, allowing the instructor to drill the student individually on one or two specific areas of need. Private lessons are great for getting a new fencer caught up with the rest of the class, working on weaknesses before a tournament, or deeper explanation on a topic that is not clear or the student enjoys. All of our instructors are able to give private lessons, which are shown above. Switch lessons can also be scheduled here as well.
All students in Beginner and Advanced classes have the option to switch a group class for a private lesson once per month. This lesson functions exactly like a normal private lesson, and is a great opportunity for young fencers to drill any weaknesses, or get caught up on any missed instruction. These switch lessons are also good for your scheduling as it gives you the ability to have a half-time lesson once per month.
Group introductory classes are a great way to get your group of friends or family involved in fencing together. We are able to schedule these classes on Saturdays from 1:00pm to 2:30pm. Please contact us directly here at least 2 weeks in advance of when you would like to schedule the class. We will attempt to work with your schedule as best as we can. We request all participants be at least 7 years old. We can accommodate up to 10 fencers per class. During this class, all fencers will be taught how to do basic footwork, cuts, parries, and ripostes, with some light fencing at the end. We request a $15 donation per participant for the afternoon. All fencers will be required to sign or have a waiver signed for them by a legal guardian before fencing. All gear will be provided by the club, just arrive in exercise clothes and ready to learn!
